James Abeel letterbook and correspondence, 1778-1780.

Letterbook (1778 May 10-September 10) containing transcripts of circa 200 letters sent by Abeel during his service as deputy quartermaster in Reading, Pa., to various officers, relating principally to the procurement and distribution of supplies for the Continental Army. Correspondents include Clement Biddle, James Calhoun, Nathanael Greene, Henry Hollingsworth, Robert L. Hooper, John Mitchell, John Oakley, Robert Patten, Charles Pettit, and Adam Zansinger.

In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff.
